Smoking in a Burnt Down House
My dad worked as for Phoenix Fire for most of his adult life. He got on in his 20s (1965) and worked till he retired in 2000. He had a bunch of stories, a lot involved how the fire service had changed in the 35 years he was on it.
For example, after they put out a building fire, often the firefighters (especially the old hands) would stand around in the smoldering building just chatting all while breathing in who-knows-what fumes.
More absurdly, a bunch of the guys would smoke cigarettes while chewing the fat.
