No single method measures cosmic distance across all scales — instead a chain: parallax for nearby stars, then standard candles (Cepheid variables, calibrated by parallax) for nearby galaxies, then Type Ia supernovae (calibrated by Cepheids) for the far universe. Each rung’s error propagates upward. The whole edifice of “how big is the universe” rests on a chain of calibrations, not one measurement.

Structurally similar to Linguistic Reconstruction as Inference — convergent, layered inference standing in for direct access. Worth a note comparing the epistemics explicitly: distance ladder, comparative reconstruction, and textual stemmatics all build confidence through independent method-agreement rather than direct observation.
